After entering a competition in April’s MCD magazine for a tour and barista lesson at Havana Coffee Works in Wellington, I was excited to hear that I had won!

In mid-May my husband and I travelled to Wellington and met with Sam, who provided us with a tour of the facilities. Havana Coffee Works is located in Tory Street, in an old building, which inside is reminiscent of old-time Havana.

Twenty-four staff cover daily operations, with Havana preferring to use manual labour instead of machines for their packaging tasks. Sam was passionate about coffee and was responsible for delivering training courses on the Havana premises. Sam also travels to teach on an ‘as required’ basis for clients.

Havana supplies coffee beans to over 200 cafes within New Zealand, and internationally. Ground coffee beans are stocked at New World, Pak n Save and Four Square stores.

Havana offers a café, roasting room, sales and distribution, and a workshop where barista machines are serviced and repaired. They also sell machines imported from Italy. Coffee beans are imported from Cuba, South America, Vanuatu and parts of Africa.

In the training room there are three large coffee trees full of fruit, where you can see the stages of the bean growth. I’d like to thank Motorhomes, Caravans and Destinations magazine for this great opportunity for me to learn how to be a barista.

If you are into coffees and want a new experience, Havana Coffee Works is a fabulous spot to visit! Havana offer tours – these tours are limited to 10 people at a time.
