Travel safely this Queen’s Birthday weekend

With the long weekend approaching (Queen’s Birthday), roads and highways in and around Auckland and Northland would see an increase in the number of cars as people head away for a three-day weekend.

NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) is encouraging Aucklanders to make informed decisions and planning ahead with their interactive maps that will help drivers gauge the best time to travel to avoid long queues.

Auckland and Northland Highway Manager Brett Gliddon says that although delays will be inevitable during peak hours,  if drivers plan their journey in advance, it can help avoid delays and ease stress.

“The busiest times will be for those using State Highway 1 heading north towards Puhoi and south towards Takanini on Friday afternoon and through to the early evening. State Highway 2 towards Coromandel is also a very busy area,” Brett says.

NZTA is also encouraging people to do a safety check on their vehicles before they leave home, allow plenty of time for travel, and take regular breaks or share the driving.

Motorists, in particular, need to make safety a priority by keeping speeds down, driving to the conditions, and staying alert.
