Warbirds over Wanaka International Airshow 2018

It began 30 years ago as a picnic outing featuring warbirds collected by aviation and farming pioneer, Sir Tim Wallis. Today, it is considered one of the world’s most unique warbird airshows featuring more than 80 aircrafts over three days.

The main stars of the airshow are the WWII fighters with a Supermarine Spitfire, based permanently in New Zealand. Famous for its contribution in WWII, more than 22,000 were produced with No.486 (NZ) Squadron being a specific Spitfire squadron of Kiwi pilots. Joining the Spitfires are a Curtiss Kittyhawk and Mustang, the Grumman Avenger and a restored twin-engine Avro Anson Mk1.

The RNZAF will display the military helicopter (NH90) and the Black Falcons aerobatic team. Old favourite, the C-130 Hercules, will appear as well as the Seasprite.

A graceful glider, one of the world’s best Packard car displays, wine, food, and a wealth of entertainment and aviation displays make this a significant event, worthy of more than one day’s visit.

Practise day is on Friday, 30 March, followed by the airshow on Saturday and Sunday. For tickets, call 0800 224 224 or visit warbirdsoverwanaka.com.
