Here are eight great wineries and vineyards that are lesser-known, but definitely worth a visit!

Volcanic Hills, Rotorua

Who knew that Rotorua had its very own winery? Volcanic Hills Winery brings together the amazing flavours of New Zealand’s best wine-growing areas, all made on-site at the winery right next door to the Skyline Gondola.

The tasting room is located at the top of the gondola with 180-degree views across Rotorua that are simply unbeatable, providing the perfect spot to simply relax and enjoy the friendly service from passionate staff paired with superb wines.

Karikari Estate, Northland

Nestled on Northland’s stunning Karikari Peninsula, Karikari Estate vineyard looks over the rolling coastal land, towards the very top of the far north of New Zealand.

New Zealand’s northernmost vineyard, Karikari Estate is both a wine-lover and a leisure-seeker’s paradise. Enjoy lunch in the cafe, which overlooks the Pacific Ocean and North Cape, and pop into the cellar door to enjoy a taste of selected varietals and vintages.

Paroa Bay Winery, Northland

Nestled in a beautiful setting amid the hills of Paroa Bay near Russell, Paroa Bay Winery is a boutique vineyard and winery combining luxury accommodation and traditional handmade, sustainable wines.

Employing traditional techniques of viticulture and dry grown vines, Paroa Bay Winery creates distinctive handcrafted wines of character in low yields, reflecting the white clay soils and warm climate of the Bay of Islands.

Kennedy Point, Waiheke Island, Auckland

Established in 1996, Kennedy Point Vineyard is Waiheke Island’s only certified organic vineyard. Set among 300-year-old pohutukawa trees overlooking Waiheke Island’s Kennedy Bay, it’s a wonderful spot to sit and enjoy stunning sea views, relax in the picturesque olive grove picnic area, and sample award-winning organic wines, extra virgin olive oil, and Kennedy Point honey.

Vilagrad Winery, Waikato

Specialising in fine wine, food, and entertainment, Vilagrad Winery in Ohaupo is family-owned and operated and now in its fifth generation.

Their exquisite range of award-winning wines is carefully hand harvested and crafted at the winery, creating high-quality wines that reflect the climate and soils of the region. Stop in for a relaxing Sunday lunch and experience their Mediterranean cuisine or enjoy a wine tour and tasting.

Kina Beach Vineyard, Nelson

Overlooking the sea in the tranquil and unspoilt setting of Kina Peninsula, Kina Beach Vineyard grows fine quality grapes and produces premium wines that reflect the outstanding characteristics of its micro-terroir.

The cellar door, known as Tasting Hut, is a charming little cottage set in the mature garden overlooking the vines and offers the perfect setting to indulge your senses, enjoy fine wine, and take in the stunning scenery.

Matawhero Wines, Gisborne

Since its first vintage in 1975, Matawhero has produced many excellent and often adventurous wines. Purchased by the Searle family in 2008, all of Matawhero’s wines are made in Gisborne’s state-of-the-art GisVin contract winemaking facility.

Call in to enjoy gourmet platters and wine-tasting nestled among the vines and olive trees, or explore the underground cellar, which is home to many older vintage Matawhero wines as well as other iconic New Zealand wine producers.

Point Bush Estates, Canterbury

Point Bush Estates is a boutique family-owned B&B (Te Kiteroa Lodge), vineyard, winery, cellar door, and restaurant (Vines). Owned by Ann and Gary Dennison, the vineyard is located on the east side of the Waimate hills and offers visitors a gorgeous piece of paradise in the Hunter Hills of South Canterbury.
