Here’s why you shouldn’t miss out on an RV road trip in New Zealand during the colder months

Stunning scenery

Whether it’s the season’s first snow in the South Island or the diverse beauty of the winterless North, the spectacular scenery during winter is worth rugging up for.

June to August is prime humpback whale spotting time in Kaikoura, and if you’re lucky, you might even be treated to the magic of Aurora Australis, which is often spotted during winter in the south. So pack those woollies, choose your destination, and discover New Zealand’s winter wonders.

Take a hot dip

One of the best parts of the colder months is soothing away the chills in a hot pool. It’s warm, it’s therapeutic, and you can make a road trip out of it by stopping at the many open-air geothermal pools scattered around the country.

Crisp mornings

The other good part of winter: the crisp mornings and bluebird days. Not many experiences come close to parking your RV atop a mountain on a clear day and sipping a cup of coffee as you take in the view. Bliss!

Ditch the crowds

Winter is probably the best time to tick off some of the top-rated New Zealand destinations on your bucket list; you’ll avoid the long queues and the summer holiday rush. Many of our biggest attractions are quiet during the cooler season and you can peacefully enjoy the beauty that unfolds as winter sets in.

Easier on the pocket

Shoulder season means campgrounds are cheaper, accommodation prices go down, and if you’re planning on renting an RV, the rates are on the lower side, too. You can experience the wonder that New Zealand is without breaking your bank. It’s a win-win.

Hit the slopes

Love skiing and/or snowboarding or perhaps you always wanted to learn the sport? From Whakapapa in the North to Cardrona in the South, New Zealand is a snow-lover’s paradise with dozens of fantastic ski fields for varying skill levels, with options of ski touring and heli-skiing.

Winter festivals

New Zealand hosts a variety of festivals during winter, ranging from a celebration of arts and culture to winter games and even a culinary event. Think live music, illuminated installations, workshops, fireworks, and more. Take your pick and head to a town that’s bringing in winter in style.

Provincial rugby

The country’s love affair with rugby starts right from the small towns with schools, clubs, and provincial unions organising the game at a local level. With most games played during winter, it’s the perfect time to catch a game of grassroots rugby as you travel the country.
