We catch up with the dream team from SmartRV to find out more about New Zealand’s largest importer of European motorhomes.

It’s not unusual for Kiwis to have close ties to places half a world away. In that spirit, SmartRV, New Zealand’s largest importer of European motorhomes, is bridging an 18,000-kilometre gap with an ever-strengthening bond that brings the best of German quality and innovation to our shores.

SmartRV specialises in German-manufactured vehicles from the world-leading Erwin Hymer Group, fully supported by local end-to-end service.

Like any long distance relationship, personal visits can really kindle the connection. Last year, two leading Hymer executives made their way from Germany to SmartRV HQ in Auckland. First, Andreas Lobejaeger, the CEO and director of international business development in February. Then in November, Carolyn Hymer, the daughter of the founder and an advisory board member, paid a surprise visit followed by a 10-day tour of New Zealand in a Bürstner motorhome.

The visitors were both pleased to see the Erwin Hymer brands – Bürstner and Carado – so well represented and were keen for SmartRV take on another of its brands, Hymer. They were further impressed by the professionalism of the sales area and workshop and that SmartRV is also a full service centre.

"They said they wished some of the European dealers would operate like we do," commented Michael Becker, CEO of SmartRV.

The visits resulted in more than great feedback. SmartRV has now been granted exclusive rights to distribute the Bürstner and Carado brands, sealing a five-year relationship with a massive vote of confidence in the company’s expertise, making SmartRV the Erwin Hymer Group’s number one partner in New Zealand.

SmartRV began importing high-end German motorhomes to New Zealand in 2011 when Michael Becker, (co-founder of Kea Campers and current co-owner of Wilderness Motorhomes and SmartRV), recognised the increasing number of privately owned motorhomes on the road.

"We could see New Zealanders are acting on their dream to join the thousands exploring the most beautiful country in the world," recalls Michael.

Smart RV partnered with the Erwin Hymer Group, a company that, for nine decades, has been at the forefront of motorhome innovation, consistently incorporating the latest technology and cutting-edge design into the eight independent brands under its umbrella. The group manufactures more than 25,000 motorhomes every year, the brands ranging from entry level to luxury class, all aligned with a common strategy – to be a world leader by offering innovative motorhomes of the highest quality.

SmartRV is one of the fastest growing Erwin Hymer dealers worldwide with a mission to offer discerning Kiwis an unprecedented range of cleverly designed and masterfully built European motorhomes and caravans.

SmartRV attributes its success not only to the superior products from the Erwin Hymer Group but also to its commitment to find the motorhome of its customers’ dreams, getting to know the customer first, matching them with the motorhome to best fit their lifestyle and aspirations.

Another factor is the reassurance of the SmartRV service centres in Auckland and Christchurch. Any European motorhome and caravan can be serviced, repaired and fitted out ensuring trouble-free motoring, as hundreds of happy Bürstner and Carado customers around New Zealand can attest.

SmartRV’s sister company, Wilderness Motorhomes, added several Carado models to its rental fleet this summer. Buyers now have the option to purchase sharply priced ex-rental Bürstner models as well as Carados in the near future. The rental fleet also offers buyers the chance to try out the different models before they buy one.
