William and Colleen McGrory firmly believe that in order to live the dream, first you have to build it. Recently they took their plans to Diamond Motorhomes in order to make the dream a reality.

When William and Colleen McGrory decided they wanted a new motorhome, they quickly became disenchanted with the idea of a standard off-the-shelf model.

Within days of meeting with the Hamilton-headquartered Diamond Motorhomes build team, William says they both knew they’d made the right decision.

"We could see from looking at Diamond Motorhomes vehicles that their construction expertise is second-to-none. I phoned them and said ‘Right, you’re building our dream. Let’s do this.’

"Little did I know then, but they took this goal and ran with it immediately. They even put ‘Build our dream’ at the top of their job board in the workshop with a photo of us next to it.

"It was an incredible response and as a result, the rapport we had with the team at Diamond Motorhomes ensured we achieved everything we set out to with this motorhome," he says.

Their motorhome

The McGrory’s motorhome is built on an Iveco three-litre turbo diesel platform which William says is a fantastic drive with plenty of power – a firm requirement given that the couple will tow both an A-framed vehicle and a boat at different times during the months ahead.

Meanwhile, they quickly learned that while physical space can be designed – such as with the dining area slide-out they specified – the illusion of space is often more important. To that end Colleen designed the interior colour schemes to make the most of available light in individual spaces.

Colleen says the wood grain in the living area actively separates this convivial space from the kitchen, even though the two are only separated by the usual thoroughfare. It’s easy to see what she means though; dressed in high quality solid white Corian, the kitchen bench area feels like a different part of the same abode. The McGrorys really have achieved an apartment feel, with recessed mood lighting adding to the ambience.

Key aspects of the kitchen highlight the bespoke nature of the build too. William is particularly proud of his simple latching system for the kitchen drawers – nothing more high-tech than some extra strong magnets that he says work very well.

The McGrorys enjoy good food, good wine and great company and it shows in the way their motorhome has been specified.

The kitchen features decent amounts of bench space for putting together dinner for two, or more. The full u-shaped dinette can be converted into a second double bed for stay-over guests once the dining table has been removed and the foot stools repositioned as fill-in squabs. There’s plenty of room for toys such as golf clubs and fishing gear in the boot. And the slide-out barbeque already looks well used.

In fact next to the spacious boot, which was near the top of William’s wish-list, he’s probably most proud of the back-lit cocktail cabinet that sits above the access way to the driver and front passenger seats.
