If you’re heading to the Coromandel this holiday season, be sure to grab the updated Complete Guide to Camping on the Coromandel. The 20-page pamphlet is chock full of places to stay, the rules around freedom camping, and handy tips for visitors.
You can pick it up at any of the Coromandel’s Council service centres or at visitor centres around the district. You can also download it from tcdc.govt.nz/camping. The guide contains a comprehensive list of campgrounds, including ones equipped with dumping stations.
If you’re tenting, there is also a list of Department of Conservation campgrounds, including what facilities each offers.
If you’re into freedom camping, check out the Department of Conservation policy and the rules for Council-controlled land such as reserves. These rules are also available at tcdc.govt.nz/camping but can be summarised as: freedom camping in the Coromandel is only allowed in certified self-contained vehicles and in an area where it is allowed. Prohibited areas are clearly sign-posted.
