They are drawn to the region mostly in the summer months, therefore the number of people sleeping in their cars increase. Oliver Park and Pollard Park near Blenheim are popular places for freedom campers, but these parks are public places, they are not designated camping sites.

Around this time last year a 155 people were found freedom camping, and most of them were vineyard workers or Kiwis looking for a cheap holiday. Under the 2011 Freedom Camping Act, Council staff issued two French vineyard workers with a fine of $200, for camping in an undesignated area.

The council is making an effort to educate freedom campers on the rules, by handing out pamphlets containing information. Business proving workers to vineyards are being encouraged to educate their staff on the rules, and once campers understand they usually follow them.
